"Dew Drops Come and Make Repairs:" A contemporary
ring-shout healing ritual
The Negro Spirituals grew out of ring-shout rituals in which individuals from widely diverse languages, religions, and cultures came together to find "common ground" and establish "mutual interdependence" on American soil--like diverse streams arriving from many different directions to birth one great river. That potentially healing river has never quite made it into the American mainstream, but has been and continues to be dammed by conceptual barriers of white vs. black, rich vs. poor, and civilized vs. heathen. In this participatory, ring-shout ritual, we follow the water cycle upstream of the dam into dew drops that, according to Yoruba tradition, help us repair the painfully violent divisions that dam the healing flow of mutual interdependence within and among our communities.
